USPS Mailbox Placement Rules — and Why They Matter
USPS sets clear standards for residential mailbox placement, and your mail carrier will absolutely notice when those standards aren't met. The bottom of the box should sit between 41 and 45 inches above the road surface, with the front face set back 6 to 8 inches from the curb edge. The door must open to the right side facing the carrier, with no obstructions for safe drive-up access.
Get those numbers wrong and you risk skipped delivery, return-to-sender mail, or even a quiet note from your route carrier. Get them right and you never think about it again. We measure every install on-site, accounting for slope, curb height, and street setback.
Mailbox Types We Install
The right box depends on your home style, your security needs, and your HOA. We install all of these and help you pick what's right.
- Standard post-mount aluminum and steel mailboxes
- Decorative cast-aluminum and architectural styles
- Locking security mailboxes (anti-theft, USPS-approved)
- Oversized parcel-friendly boxes for online shoppers
- Brick and stone column mailbox builds
- Wall-mount mailboxes for porch and entry installations
Post Material Options for Tennessee Weather
Tennessee freezes, thaws, soaks, and bakes — sometimes in the same week. Your post material matters. Pressure-treated 4x4s are the workhorse of residential installs and last 10–15 years with proper sealing. Vinyl posts shrug off rot and never need paint. Decorative cast-aluminum holds finish beautifully and never warps. Stainless and powder-coated steel are options for modern designs.
We walk you through the trade-offs at your free estimate so you choose with confidence.
Choosing the Right Style for Your Home
A traditional brick colonial wants a different mailbox than a contemporary craftsman or a modern farmhouse. Heavy decorative posts overpower light home facades. Slender minimalist boxes get lost in front of large homes. We've installed enough across Middle Tennessee neighborhoods to make recommendations that actually work — and we'll show you photos of similar homes if it helps.
